The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a world-leading internationally oriented research center, committed to discovering new approaches to prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. To this end, researchers at ten DZNE sites across Germany pursue a translational and interdisciplinary strategy comprising five interconnected areas: fundamental research, clinical research, health care research, population health science, and systems medicine.

For the DZNE site in Ulm, we are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) in the group “Translational Peptidomics” Code 6017/2021/3 in full-time.

The main goal of the research group “Translational Peptidomics” led by PD Dr. Patrick Oeckl is the use of mass spectrometry-based peptidomic and proteomic approaches for the discovery and validation of peptide biomarkers in CSF and blood for neurodegenerative diseases and to study disease-related changes in translational research projects. The focus of the research is on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and Huntington´s disease (HD) with access to the resources of the large biobank in Ulm and an established research environment for these diseases in Ulm. The group has many years of experience with development and application of optimized mass spectrometric workflows using state-of-the-art technology (Sciex QTRAP6500, Thermo QExactive).

Your tasks

We are looking for an ambitious postdoctoral researcher for clinical and translational peptidomic and proteomic studies. The focus can be more on the practical part (sample preparation, mass spectrometry) or on bioinformatic analysis of peptidomic/proteomic data. The specific tasks involved in this position are:

  • Development of state-of-the-art peptidomic workflows using mass spectrometry
  • (Targeted) Peptidomic/proteomic analysis of human CSF/brain samples for biomarker discovery in ALS, FTLD or HD
  • Bioinformatic analysis of peptidomic/proteomic data
  • Collaboration with other groups in translational research projects
  • Presentations at progress report meetings and scientific conferences
  • Writing of scientific publications

Requirements

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, neuroscience, molecular medicine or other relevant field and should have a strong background in mass spectrometry-based peptidomics/proteomics/bioinformatics. Prior experience in biomarker research and neuroscience is a plus. Applicants should be fluent in English and possess good communication and team working skills.

We offer

  • Working in an international team within a stimulating research environment and with very well equipped laboratories
  • An international environment characterized by a strong focus on science and research
  • A high potential for the individual development of our employees
  • Targeted personnel development
  • A full-time position, initially temporary limited to 2 years (extension possible)
  • Employment, payment and social benefits are determined by the Public Sector Collective Agreement (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst – TVöD Bund)
